Listen with your eyes

LISTEN WITH YOUR EYES - praying with art and the imagination

Led by Antonia Lynn at the London Spirituality Centre

Many thanks to all who shared in the course in the summer of 2014. I'm hoping to run it again in 2015 - keep watching the Centre website, or register advance interest via their contact page.

The encounter with beauty can become the wound of the arrow that strikes the soul and thus makes it see clearly. (Pope Benedict XVI)

This is not an academic course - no lectures in the history of art! - but an exploration of a way of praying, engaging the heart and imagination through the sense of sight. In the same way that the practice of Lectio Divina ('sacred reading') differs from Bible study as a way of entering into conversation with the word of God, so this might be called Visio Divina - a way into contemplation of the Word made flesh through art and iconography.

There is no place in [a work of art] which does not see you. You must change your life. (Rainer Maria Rilke)

Each week there will be some input and times for reflection and sharing, but the heart of each session will be an encounter with a painting from the Christian tradition, allowing it to speak to us of the God who loves us and became visible for us. (We hope there will also be an opportunity to visit a London gallery together). Absolutely no prior knowledge or experience is required, just a desire to "listen with our eyes" to the unique word of God to each of us.

I make an icon of God in so far as he has become visible... I salute all matter with reverence, for it is filled with divine energy and grace. (St John of Damascus)
